from:Robert Funge
So you've got the best virus protection software, you're running the very latest virus definition files, and you keep your computer bang up to date with the latest security updates and patches. You've got a fantastic Firewall that filters out any dodgy stuff that's trying to infiltrate your system, and you're extremely security conscious with respect to logon names and passwords. In a nut shell, you're computer is impenetrable...Right?
WRONG!
Ever heard of Spyware? Yes, of course you have. Then you must regularly scan your computer for possible infection? No, then listen up my friend perhaps you should…
In case you've been living on another planet for the last few years you wouldn't of heard of the name Spyware. As the name suggests it's a program that spies on what you're doing. To be more precise, Spyware is a piece of software that when installed will monitor your online activities, and report this information back to a third party.
The trouble is Spyware manufactures furtively attach these parasites within other programs you download. So, when you happily go about installing this software onto your computer you're also inadvertently installing the Spyware program too. Free software and perhaps trial programs are the main culprits, although there are many different forms of Spyware and they can happily coexist with most computer programs.
In fact some advertisers have been using Spyware for quite a while as a marketing aid. Hands up all those people who actually read the license agreement provided when you install them? Not many I bet. Well, unless you do take the time to read every word you may just be giving your consent to allowing a basic type of Spyware to be installed on your computer. Although this generally won't cause you any real problems, it's still not pleasant knowing somebody could be spying on your browsing habits.
However, far worse is the type of Spyware that doesn't give you any warnings. These programs are created for one sole purpose, and that's to try and gain information fro m your computer that you would prefer remain strictly confidential. Personal data like login names, passwords, bank details and credit card transactions are targets and for obvious reasons.
So what can be done to prevent Spyware, or how do we remove it from our computers if we're already infected? Well, in terms of preventing Spyware, try limiting the amount of software you download and be cautious as to which Websites you visit. You will also need to regularly use a Spyware utility program to check and remove any Spyware that is found. Consider placing this as high a priority as running your virus software. By following this you will be doing all you can to make sure your system is never compromised and your data safe from prying eyes.
